Machiko Kyo holds the distinction of having played three of the most memorable female starring roles in the history of classic jidai-geki: the assaulted wife in Rashomon, the ethereal Lady Wakasa in Ugetsu, and Lady Kesa in Gate of Hell. Even with those stellar performances to her credit, I treasure her most as the sassy prostitute Mickey in Mizoguchi's Street of Shame.
