The handsome Tsuruta was best known for starring in modern-day yakuza films, but he also made his mark in the jidai-geki world. Most notably he starred as Musashi's rival Kojiro in Hiroshi Inagaki's Samurai trilogy, and gave a fine performance as "original gangster" Jirocho in a 1960s film series directed by Masahiro Makino.
