Something of a matinee heartthrob with his boyish good looks, Okawa was best known for playing humorous goofball types. Though he did get the chance to show his dramatic chops with serious roles like Lord Asano in the 47 Ronin adaptation Ako Roshi, and the tragic lead in Tai Kato's The Cruel Story. He also starred in Sadatsugu Matsuda's Shingo's Challenge series.
