The Show
Chronology

The Anna Nicole Show Being a documentary series assembled from hundreds of hours of footage, The Anna Nicole Show often presents events in a sequence that doesn't follow chronological order. There's nothing wrong with that, and sometimes it helps create a more sitcom-like flow to suggest that events from different times happened on the same day or what have you. Just be aware that you can't trust what Anna Nicole & co. say about when they did things in their post-production interview segments, because they lie like crazy all the time!

After watching all the episodes a zillion times, and gathering chronological clues from news sources and the status of Anna Nicole's bedroom decor throughout Season One, I have assembled the following rough timeline of when stuff actually happened. I hope this conclusively proves what an obsessive geek I truly am.

Season One

Episode 1: "Dream House"
Aired August 4, 2002

The Guess 20th Anniversary party took place on May 9, 2002, and was possibly the earliest segment taped by the E! crew. Anna Nicole seems very conscious of the cameras in the scenes at the hotel before and after the party, as if she is still getting used to them. In a deleted scene used in promos she yells "Stop following me!" at the cameraman, and as shown at the end of Episode 13, she tells the cameras to go away because it's time for her to eat. This bashfulness would rapidly vanish.

In her interview scenes, Anna Nicole implies that she went to the party on the same day she looked at houses with Reza Arshadi, but this seems unlikely, considering the difference in her mood between the two segments. The househunting and moving into the new house took place in mid-May. In the Larry King interview recorded May 25, Anna Nicole says that she has just moved into her new house.

Episode 2: "Interior Decorating"
Aired August 11, 2002

As revealed by Anna Nicole's outfit with the American flag bandana on her head, the opening scenes in the new house (moving is and looking at snapshots from the Guess? party) take place on the same day as Episode 1's closing scene (Anna Nicole watching TV in her empty bedroom).

Bobby Trendy's first appearance takes place on a later day. Anna Nicole behaves as if this is the first time she has met Bobby, but I believe she was introduced to him beforehand and this is just an act for the cameras. She shows Bobby her portrait of Larry King, so this scene takes place before that May 25 interview. Anna Nicole's trip to Bobby's store does indeed take place later that day.

Anna Nicole and Kim's controversial game of Punch Bug supposedly takes place on the way to Trashy Lingerie, but it doesn't. The Punch Bug fight happens on the same day as the tattoo parlor segments from Episode 3, as you can tell by Anna Nicole's outfit and hair. Because the entire Punch Bug scene is shot from the back seat of Kim's car, it's easy to overlook the fact that Anna Nicole is wearing different clothes when they arrive at Trashy Lingerie.

The Larry King interview was broadcast on May 29, 2002, which is presumably when Anna Nicole and crew are watching it at her house, unless it's on TiVo. The moving of J. Howard's ashes takes place around that time or earlier, because Anna Nicole still has only a mattress on the floor in her bedroom.

Episode 3: "A Stupid Eating Contest"
Aired August 18, 2002

The eating contest at Mazzarino's is hard to pin down, but since it was previewed at the end of Episode 1, it must have been taped early on. It probably was around the same time as Bobby's first delivery of furniture, as depicted in this episode.

The trip to the tattoo parlor almost certainly does not take place immediately following the eating contest, given the vast changes in Anna Nicole's hair, makeup, clothing and attitude. The Punch Bug game from the previous episode took place on the same day, probably on the way to the tattoo parlor, since the ladies wouldn't have been as prone to slug each other on the arms following Lemonade's handiwork.

The brief clip of Anna Nicole and Howard hugging in reconciliation did not happen after the eating contest, but is drawn from the early footage of Anna Nicole in the American flag bandana as seen in both of the previous episodes. The editors stuck it in there to create the feeling of a happy ending.

Episode 4: "The Fun and the Fear"
Aired August 25, 2002

The dentist scenes are very weird chronologically, because when Anna Nicole and Howard go the dentist's office at the beginning, they are leaving from her old house. So the first trip to the dentist was one of the earliest scenes taped in the series. E! spokespersons have explained that Anna Nicole's slurred speech during the househunting in Episode 1 was attributable to the drugs she was taking after root canal work, so it all adds up.

Therefore, the scenes of a fully recovered Anna Nicole playing with her friend Kelly took place weeks later, not "a few days later." And the flashback scene of Anna Nicole showing Kelly's teeth to her dentist would have been done really, really early on.

The trip to Magic Mountain was probably taped in or around June. Shots from the theme park were often used in publicity before the show premiered. Speaking of the premiere, her interview segments from Episode 1 were taped on the same day as the Magic Mountain adventure. She's wearing the same "No Stalking" top and the same hairdo tied up in a pink scarf. She has on different pants, but she probably changed pants after coming home from Magic Mountain because she got soaked on the log ride.

Episode 5: "Viva Las Vegas!"
Aired September 8, 2002

The scene with Bobby Trendy before the Las Vegas trip obviously takes place on the same day as Bobby's delivery in Episode 4, with Anna Nicole wearing the same Hustler Store tank top and red sweatpants.

Anna Nicole's publicity photos for the show first appeared in early July, so the scenes from the photo shoot must have taken place in May or June.

According to news reports at the time, the trip to Vegas took place around July 17-19, 2002. As the gang is getting ready to leave, we see an Anna Nicole Show poster hanging in her living room. This was probably prepared for the Television Critics Association press event where she promoted the show on July 9.

Anna Nicole canceled an announced eating contest at the Rio buffet because of recent dental work, so we might assume that her return trip to the dentist at the end of Episode 4 took place in early July.

The gang goes to the Chippendales show with Anna Nicole wearing the same outfit that she wore on the trip, which suggests that it was the same day. But Kim's Diary reports that they went to see the Chippendales on the night after they got into town. Also, in a deleted scene of Kevin and Dan escorting her to the show, Anna Nicole tells them that she got into town yesterday.

In her interviews Anna Nicole claims that they went to Jaguars on the same night as the Chippendales and riding the electric cart on the strip ("We wasn't tired..."). But Anna Nicole suddenly has a different outfit at Jaguars, so we can assume this was actually the following night.

Episode 6: "The Tao of Foo-Foo"
Aired September 15, 2002

Leaving Las Vegas, Anna Nicole is wearing the same clothes she had on at Jaguars, presumably the previous night. This means she may have worn only two outfits over the course of four days, which seems like a real puzzler. Did Kimmie forget to pack everything for her or what?

The audition of the four chefs takes place quite a bit later in Anna Nicole Show chronology. As Anna Nicole comes downstairs for the taste test, you can glimpse the pink and white checkerboard of fur on her bedroom wall, which we won't see Frankie put up until the next episode.

Bobby Trendy's deliverymen arrive with the pink headboard for Anna Nicole's bed, replacing the brown/rust colored one, and presto! There's no fur up on the bedroom wall yet.

Episode 7: "Designer Deathmatch"
Aired September 22, 2002

In the opening segment, Frankie staples up the wall of fur. In her interviews Anna Nicole states that she was throwing a party for a group of girls later that day, but the party is definitely on a different day. She has her Anna Nicole Show posters up when the girls come over, so the party is most likely after the Vegas trip.

When Amelia the pet psychic takes Sugar Pie upstairs, the new pink bed is in Anna Nicole's bedroom, so this scene is close to the timeframe of the rest of the episode.

Bobby and Frankie's tension-filled meeting takes place on the same day as the opening segment with Frankie. Anna Nicole has changed clothes and now has her red western shirt on, while Howard is wearing a white shirt and cowboy hat. They wore these outfits later that evening for some taping at the Saddle Ranch cowboy bar, with Howard riding the mechanical bull before Claude Dauman ever did. This footage never made it into the show, but clips were shown on Access Hollywood and stills from the evening appeared in media outlets such as Entertainment Weekly. Since these Saddle Ranch photos appeared before the show's premiere, we can conclude that Bobby and Frankie's first confrontation took place in late July 2002. The Bobby Trendy relationship was already beginning to sour before the show went on the air.

Episode 8: "Everything's Relative"
Aired September 29, 2002

This episode contains the first material on the show that was definitely shot after the series premiere. The Cousin Shelly appearance could well have taken place post-premiere, because Shelly's comments on Anna Nicole being filmed all the time suggest that she has seen the show. Plus, clips of Shelly were never previewed until the week before this broadcast, so her visit could have been taped later in the season.

Shelly appears on Anna Nicole's doorstep and gets taken out to dinner all on the same day. Contrary to Anna Nicole's assertion in her interviews, she didn't go make publicity stops inbetween. The nasty KROQ interview took place around August 12-13, and the Tonight Show appearance came on August 16. The day with Shelly probably happened after both of these events.

Episode 9: "Road Rage"
Aired October 6, 2002

In an interview with E! News just prior to the show's premiere, Anna Nicole mentioned her plans and hopes for getting her driver's license. So the studying and test-taking probably took place during August-September. The scenes with Bobby, Frankie and Howard takes place on September 1, because Bobby mentions that tomorrow is Labor Day.

The closing scenes at the go-cart track were actually taped much earlier than the driver's test. An article in the July 22 Time magazine mentions a trip to a go-cart track where the producers were keeping Anna Nicole pumped full of Red Bull energy drink. In a deleted scene at this episode's go-cart track available on the E! web site, Anna Nicole says she has lost track of how many Red Bulls she has chugged. Q.E.D.

Episode 10: "Queen of All Media"
Aired October 13, 2002

This one's easy. Anna Nicole appeared on Regis & Kelly (and Good Morning America) on July 30, and on the Howard Stern show on July 31.

Episode 11: "War Games"
Aired October 20, 2002

This episode is like a hodgepodge of choice leftovers the producers wanted to use before wrapping up the season, so its chronology is a mess to try and sort out. In the brief clips at a shooting range, Anna Nicole has the same evening gown she wore on the August 16 Tonight Show, oddly enough. I would have guessed she was wearing the same dress on a different day, but her hairdo also looks the same... so maybe she went to blow off some steam after chatting with Leno.

The paintball segment was probably taped late in the season, because it was never shown in previews, and E! has tended to favor publicizing action-packed and funny scenes like this one. On the other hand, they could have skipped it because Anna Nicole's protective gear covers her face, making the footage less effective in a brief ad.

The shopping spree at the Hustler Store, on the other hand, was heavily teased in the promos as early as mid-September, so it must have taken place in late August or early September. The Puppetry of the Penis show obviously happened on the same night.

As for the legal threat from Bobby Trendy: we know Bobby and Howard were still on (uneasy) speaking terms right before Labor Day. The E! web site posted an interview with Bobby on September 16 (no longer online) in which he viciously lambasted Howard. Since the gloves were off at that point, we can make an educated guess that the letter from Bobby's lawyer was sent somewhere in that two-week span.

Anna Nicole's appearance on Hollywood Squares purportedly followed the reading of the letter, but the game show gig was actually taped around August 20. The shows aired a month later, on September 26 and 27.

Howard's impersonation of Bobby probably took place in mid-September. Based on evidence found in Episode 12, that scene must have come after the Anna Nicole lookalike show with the drag queens, rather than before. The big-screen TV at the nightclub is showing the end of the E! True Hollywood Story on Anna Nicole with the countdown clock to the premiere of The Anna Nicole Show. You might therefore suppose this takes place on August 4, but Anna Nicole was actually at a different party on the night of the premiere, as shown on E! News. The nightclub had to be playing a videotape of the show's premiere for the lookalike show.

Episode 12: "Pink Apocalypse"
Aired October 27, 2002

The demolition of the pink bed took place immediately following Howard's impersonation of Bobby seen in Episode 11. That scene showed Howard freaking out and screaming "No! No! NOOO!," apparently in response to Anna Nicole calling him "supercilious." But in an unedited clip available online, what she actually told Howard was that she was going to go tear the bed down, and that was why he pretended to go nuts. Anna Nicole is wearing the same outfit in both scenes. Since Bobby's behavior at the drag show was apparently the final straw, these scenes must have followed that evening.

Anna Nicole's meeting with Patti from the Millionaire's Club took place in early August. On the August 16 Tonight Show, Anna Nicole told Leno she had just talked to the lady from the dating service. Also, Anna Nicole's interview scenes in Episode 4 were taped on the same day she met with Patti, since she's wearing the same outfit and the same blue flower in her hair.

The clips depicting Anna Nicole's friendship with Kimmie cover the whole timeline of Season One. The dispute over the telephone in the bedroom comes from the same early footage shown in the first three episodes, with Anna Nicole wearing the American flag bandana. Other scenes with Kim and Kelly show Anna Nicole wearing the same pink top she wore while househunting in Episode 1, but obviously on a later day. The 32nd Annual LA Gay Pride Celebration, where Anna Nicole rode in the parade wearing a red dress ("I'm gay every day!"), took place on June 23, 2002.

Kimmie's birthday may have fallen "on Halloween this year," but her birthday party as shown in this episode certainly didn't, seeing as how it aired on October 27. But the party probably took place in October, and it was almost certainly the final segment taped for Season One. There are a lot of E! staff members at the party, identifiable by their T-shirts with anti-Trendy slogans: "Trendy... So Last Season," "Stop Bobby Trendy," etc. On the back the shirts read "Anna Nicole Show Cast & Crew -- 2002." So it's reasonable to conclude that this isn't just a party for Kimmie, it's also the wrap party for the season.

Episode 13: "Mystery Date"
Aired November 3, 2002

The season finale was taped in August and left in the can until November, so the first season could wind up with the much-hyped "first date in two years." On the August 16 Tonight Show, Anna Nicole said she was going on a blind date the next day. It's possible Patti set her up on several dates and E! chose only to broadcast Claude's, but my gut feeling is that the evening with Claude Dauman took place on Saturday, August 17, 2002.

My most coveted scene that was deleted from Season One also took place that same day. The previews at the end of Episode 10 showed the unreasonably breathtaking sight of Anna Nicole dancing on her bed in her underwear. If you look closely, you can see the corsage Claude gave her is still on her wrist, and that's the white top she wore that evening that she's slinging around her head. She is probably reenacting how she rode the mechanical bull that night. Oh, Claude... that's what you could have seen in person that night if you'd just played your cards right, dude!

The Anna Nicole Holiday Special
Aired December 15, 2002

According to Debbie Puente, the pastry chef who assisted Anna Nicole in the kitchen, the big Christmas party took place on December 1, 2002, a scant two weeks before the show was broadcast.
